The Blasters  - The Blasters were formed in Downey, CA, in 1979 by Phil and Dave Alvin, brothers who literally learned their craft from R&B masters Big Joe Turner and T-Bone Walker. They started as a rockabilly revival, but have always been more than that. Punk was part of the mix, as are R&B, blues and mountain music. They released an auspicious debut, "American Music," in 1980 on the small Rollin' Rock label before being signed to L.A. punk label Slash Records, and their self-titled second album, from 1981, put them on the national map. The band lost its original songwriter, Dave Alvin, in 1986. Phil, the singer/rhythm guitarist, carried on, and the band currently includes two other original members drummer Bill Bateman and bassist John Bazz, along with Keith Wyatt on guitar. Their sixth and latest studio album is 2012's "Fun on Satrday Night." (By the way, the Alvins have worked together periodically since 1986, recording parts of soundtrack for a musical written by Stephen King and John Mellencamp in 2013; an album of Big Bill Broonzy's music, "Common Ground," in 2014; and "Lost Time" in 2015.)

Aimee Mann  - Aimee Mann first made her mark on the mainstream as the face of the '80s pop group Til Tuesday. But Mann really came into her own with her solo career, which boasts eight studio albums and an Academy Award nomination in 2000 for her song, "Save Me," from the film "Magnolia." Her lyric writing is lucid, with an ear for the rhythms of everyday expression.
